Pinoyz in the Hood: Filipino Comedy All-Stars Rock Compton, CA

History was made on Friday, June 7th and Waltertainment LLC was there. The 1^st ever Filipino comedy tour kicked off at the Crystal Park Casino in Compton, CA to a fantastic response. Yes, Compton. In a word, the show was hilarious. Every comic put together their best stuff and left the crowd of a few hundred people absolutely rolling.

Comedian Edwin San Juan who hails from nearby Cerritos, CA produced the event. Marc Fernandez emceed the show and kicked the night off with a set of his own. Joining him on the stage were hilarious sets from African-American comic Flye, "if it’s in Compton you gotta have a brutha represent."

Following him was Japan’s Kevin Kataoka "not a lot of Asians in Arkansas. Everyone wanted me to fix their computer." A Filipino brother by the name of ‘Koy’(not sure if that’s first or last) followed with a dead on impression of Michael Jackson. Edwin himself did a set and talked about his black brother in law as "being one of the educated blacks. Not one of those thugs that yells ‘bitch, quit cookin’ that rice and suck my dick!" Finally the headliner, Rex Navarette, blasted the audience with his patented heavily accented impressions.

The tour takes its show on the road to San Diego and then up to the Bay Area by the end of the year. If you can possibly see them live you definitely should catch the show. You will not be disappointed.

Some of the humor had a decidedly brown/Asian/minority slant, pardon the expression, but a lot of the jokes were about everyday life with some sexual jokes and bad words sprinkled throughout. That fact alone makes me convinced that these guys can crossover the racial joke barrier and do well in the mainstream.

Waltertainment LLC was there helping out AJ Calomay of Xylophone Films with their video production of the show. None other than Waltertainment star, Abraham Spigner, did the honors as the on-air personality interviewing happy audience members. If you can’t see the show live then you must order the video because I promise you will be laughing the whole time.
